Release Notes:

After the departure of Jimmy Ryan, many questioned if Haste The Day could
continue being successful without with the vocals that spawned the hit album
"When Everything Falls" as well as their first two efforts. Stephen Keech took
the reins and put up an impressive show for their 2007 album "Pressure The
Hinges," and while it stood as a settling foundation for the band, there was
room for improvement. They have done exactly that with their new record
"Dreamer."

Being excited to check out their latest outing, I was quick to drop everything
and drop my opinion on it. Much like the love I have for many of the melodic
hardcore albums that have dropped recently, such as Destroy The Runner, August
Burns Red, Misery Signals, and Atreyu (more hard rock this time around), Haste
The Day has polished their guitar work, honed their vocals and put forth a
generally more impressive effort then albums before it.

With striking speed and a dedicated balance of charging, swift riffs as well as
vocals which shift from booming shouts and growls to soft serenades and smooth
harmonies. And while they take cues from other successful hardcore formulas, HTD
also steps off the beaten path with tracks like "Labyrinth" and
"Autumn"(rerecorded) that will have you thinking about post-Vhiessu-like Thrice.
And I think that is why this record is so amazing. It lays down a solid platform
of the norm that features catchy melodic guitars, quick breakdowns and
thunderous vocals, but then it stretches out to encompass new styles where
complex musical progression is the goal.

One thing "Dreamer" doesn't do is let you down. It sprints headfirst with
intricate guitars, fierce shouts and a refined/matured sound that not only lets
your subconscious ponder the inner workings of it, but also lets your ears enjoy
the abundance of infectious and melodic hardcore present here. Haste The Day
will be able to crush the questions on whether the band can be successful
without JR because this is one of the best records this year. You will listen to
it so much, you might end up dreaming about it.

   Metalcore, as of late, has been over run with bands that inter lace
   bone-crushing break­downs and fre netic riffs with howls and screams about
   the power of Jesus and God. In fact, one would be hard pressed to find a sec
   u lar met al core act that has “bro ken out” in the past few years. In this
   Christian Metalcore scene, Haste The Day can eas ily be con­sid ered vet er
   ans. Having released their debut Solid State full length in 2004, Haste The
   Day has been on the label longer than Attack Attack! has been a band.
   Unfortunately, vet eran sta tus doesn’t always mean excep tional skill. On
   each of their past four full lengths, the band, while prov ing them selves
   com pe tent at both their instru ments and at the craft of song writ ing,
   never really exceeded the expec ta tions set forth by their genre. While some
   of their songs are excep tional, most blend in with each other, and, unfor
   tu­nately, on the band’s fifth full length, Attack Of The Wolf King, the case
   is not much different.

   Attack of the Wolf King begins with the aptly titled “Wake Up The Sun,”
   which, with its dizzy ing riffs, will wake up the lis tener. Lead vocal ist
   Stephen Keech’s demonic screams add to an atmos phere of a care fully con
   trolled chaos, and the sung cho rus of “We are human, we are weak” pro vide
   both a ray of light in the song’s dark atmos phere, and a place to take a
   breath before the band launches into the sec ond verse. All in all, the first
   track proves to be one of the great est on the album. Unfortunately, most of
   the other songs on the album are not as great. On the con trary, they soon
   grow indis tin­guish able from each other. Thankfully, there are still some
   glim mers of hope sprin kled through out. “Travesty” fea tures twin duel ing
   gui tars, “Un-Manifest” unseats the lis tener sev eral times with its
   earth-shattering, hell-raising cries to the heav ens, and “Crush Resistance”
   opens with one of Keech’s best vocal per for mances of the record set over a
   fre netic riff a la August Burns Red. Unfortunately, none of these glim mers
   man ages to lighten up the gap ing black hole in the record that is the
   band’s attempt at a bal lad: “White As Snow.” Uninspired and lack ing in emo
   tion, the bal lad is a sad attempt to show off a softer side to the band. The
   only sav ing grace of the song is that the record is able to imme di ately
   get back into its stride with the open ing notes of “Crush Resistance.”

   Overall, Attack Of The Wold King is a fairly aver age met al core release.
   While not tech ni­cally ter ri ble, it is lit tle more than bland met al
   core. Fortunately, the album has enough good songs that, when com bined with
   some songs from the band’s cat a log, can fill a decent live set as sup port
   band, some thing this group will for ever be doomed to unless they pull out
   all the stops on their next release. Unfortunately, his tory usu ally repeats
   itself, and if a band can’t mas ter the art of writ ing good, mem o rable
   music by their fifth album, it is fool ish to think that they ever will.
