With their third studio album "Seventeen Days," 3 Doors Down have cemented their status as a formidable force in the music scene. The LP, while not as instantly likable as 2002's "Away From the Sun," maintains the group's radio-friendly tendencies for captivating melodies and cutting lyrics.

The set's lead single, "Let Me Go," a sizeable hit across several different radio formats, best summarizes the strength of the group. Still, superb cuts further abound, such as the stirring "It's Not Me," which was previously released on their 2003 live EP "Another 700 Miles." Over the top with conviction and passion, the performance is even stronger in its studio rendition.

The grating "Never Will I Break" and the soaring "Live For Today" rock hard and summon repeated listens, while "Father's Son" serves as a gripping tale of the plight of an illegitimate child.

"Maybe I'm just crazy or the devil got inside/But either way my soul is gone/I've learned this all night/The one hand throws the whiskey/And the other throws the gun/As he cries out to the heavens/I am not my father's son."

"Landing In London," which is performed with classic rock legend Bob Seger, examines the life of a traveling musician longing for his home and family, while the following "The Real Life," quite possibly is a continuation of the story:

"But I woke up to real life/And I realized its not worth running from anymore/When there was nowhere left to hide I found out/That nothings real here but I wont stop now /Until I find a better part of me."

"Be Somebody," which explores the relationship between a son and his mother, shoots a bulls-eye at the heart. So too does the concluding "Here By Me," a tale of longing for that special someone who does not reciprocate the same feelings, which is accompanied by gut-seizing instrumentation that perfectly mirrors the somber state of mind the lyrics create.

Despite the fact that it is permeated by gloomy subject matter with lyrics that range from unadulterated defiance to the deepest sorrow, "Seventeen Days" is filled from top to bottom with potential smash-hits, making it the group's most solid release yet. Fans of the mainstream post-grunge sound that are going through difficult times will not be able to put this CD down. After all, whoever said despair couldn't sound awesome?

This is a great sampling of 3 Doors Down. If you are a fan of the band then you will be impressed with this CD mainly because they take on some of the great songs from their first 2 releases "The Better Life" and "Away from the Sun." 3 Doors Down is an excellent live band, so it was great to see them finally produce a live disc.
The songs that are on the CD are some of their hits, like "Kryptonite", "Duck and Run", "Here without You", and "When I'm Gone.". "Kryptonite" really comes alive, and the band really rocks out on the chorus. (The only negative of the song is that the band does one of those hokey "let's get the crowd involved" moments towards the end of the song, having the fans chant off key lyrics for part of the song. Still it doesn't mess up a good song). The other songs sound pretty good as well, "Here Without You" being a great slow ballad and "When I'm Gone" being dedicated to the U.S troops with an intro before the song.

My favorite on this CD was the "new" song "It's Not Me", which is track 6. The song has a real hard rockish edge to it, kind of which makes it very effective live and loud. This song seems to personify Three Doors Down and their style of music as well; the "live" effect of this song is good to hear, and the song exemplifies why live rock is often better than studio rock (as one reviewer noted).

If you are a fan of Lynard Skynard, the last song is a pretty good rendition of "That Smell."

Very rarely do I like this kind of music. Yet 3 Doors Down do it so well, it's hard not to like it. They can manage to sound hard with a rock edge, yet manage to maintain a melodic pop quality to their songs. The lead singer may be in a rock band, but he has a great voice and doesn't have to resort to screaming.
"The Better Life" was good, but I think this album manages to top it. "When I'm Gone" has been the massive hit thus far and has become one of the biggest radio hits of the last year. It's been overplayed, but it's still listenable. The title track "Away From the Sun" is a definite stand-out track. It's slow, but I'd love to see it as a single...great chorus. "The Road I'm On" is one of the harder tracks and was the second single. "Ticket To Heaven" is another catchy rock/pop track that would make a good single. The star of this album is "Here Without You" definitely. Already proving to be a huge radio hit, it's a fantastic rock ballad and very relatable. "Changes" and "Dangerous Game" are ok too. "Sarah Yellin" definitely stands out from the other songs with a more serious vibe.

Overall, great album. "Away From the Sun", "When I'm Gone", "Ticket To Heaven", and "Here Without You" are the key tracks that make it wortha 5 star rating. The other songs are good and listenable, but these jump out at you. If you liked "The Better Life" there's a big chance that you'll like "Away From the Sun." Similar content and great music.

Fresh on the scene, 3 Doors Down is a Mississippi-based rock band---yeah, rock bands, remember them? They play instruments, write their own lyrics, and don't hop around onstage like programmed robots! 3 Doors Down is a welcoming change from the disposable music of today--their debut album "The Better Life" is full of sonic guitar hooks, pounding drums, and a lot of potential.
The album opens with the smash hit "Kryptonite," which is a great song to turn up and rock out to, with its fast guitars and heavy-hitting beat. This is the song that made me notice the band, and once "Loser" was released as a single, I was hooked. "Loser" starts out almost as a ballad, with its slow, strumming guitars and the soulful voice of Brad Arnold. However, what sets this tune apart from the rest is its break in the middle, where the band kicks in and rocks! It's guitar hooks and crashing drums really illustrate the band's ability to show both sides of their music.

There are some other standouts as well. "Be Like That" is a wistful ballad in the style of Matchbox 20, with full guitars and soulful lyrics about people's perception that the grass is always greener somewhere else. "Down Poison" opens up with some very intricate guitar work, while the title track is a pure rock anthem. "By My Side" illustrates some awesome sonic guitar work and gives proof to the fact that this band is very innovative. The only complaint that I have is that at times the band struggles with the lyrics, sometimes throwing in words that will rhyme well, but not always keep up with the pace of the guitars. However, with this variety on the debut album (which at this time has sold over two million copies) and the ability to create good, pure rock songs, 3 Doors Down has a great career ahead of them.
