Death Is Not Welcome are back with their new 4-song EP. Having reviewed their full-length just over a year ago, I was excited to see what this young band would pull out of their hats this time around.
One thing that set DINWH apart from a lot of other post-hardcore acts was their unsilenced messages of Truth. Fortunately, DINWH are still set in that path and not backing down for a more digestible message. This album sees a step up in both musicianship and production, but doesn't do much as far as progression. However, the songs just seem more sensible this time around, transitioning more smoothly and pieced together more appropriately. Lyrical topics include humility, creation, grace and promise of a better life. Vocalist Stevo's clean vocals are vast while his screams are as strained and desperate as I've ever heard them, adding a lot of raw emotion. The screams on the last album were very poor, and they are impressively perfect here. Nearly every song on this album ends up with an epic riff, vocal line or both. The guitars are not too complex, but I can't think of any outright boring riff. Death Is Not Welcome Here are definitely more focused on rocking out then showoff licks. The standout tracks are “We Are On Fire” and “This Life Won't Last,” but a tough choice to pick out.
This is a really good little EP. It grew on me, and the repeated listens made me feel like I know the band. I'd recommend this for fans of Dead Poetic, Blindside and early The Spirit That Guides Us.
