The influence of independent and alternative music's celebrated past is undeniable on VERSOMA's six-track, 18-minute debut EP... but with plenty of aggression and passion retained from years in the punk/metal/hardcore underground. With members having done time in LICKGOLDENSKY, ANODYNE, HOT CROSS, ORCHID and more, one might expect chaotic screaming madness, but (fortunately) this is a wall of guitars mixed with desperate, wailing and haunting vocals; darkness mixed with simplistic genius, and the manic quality control of three different label owners involved. Recorded at Translator Audio with band-member Mike Hill and mastered at West West Side by Alan Douches, the first sonic offering from VERSOMA is an exciting step towards uncharted audio territories, and an excellent indication of things to come.
Mouth foaming bloggers are calling these new Robotic Empire signees a super group, but that seems like a stretch for the motley crew of relatively unsung hardcore and metal players from Hot Cross, Transistor Transistor, Anodyne, Wolves, LickGoldenSky, Orchid, Get Fucked & Bucket Full of Teeth. The participants themselves say their previous and current affiliations "may or may not be a good reason to listen to the music we are currently making." but for the record, those are very good reasons! These Philly undergoundlings kick ass and expand on some of the best elements of their past works. They've only just played their debut gig in June, but this badass debut EP displays enormous potential: sirens blaring, bendy dual guitar freakouts, groovin' hardcore rhythmic bass and drum attacks, agressive vocals that frequently get melodic without getting all emo-whiny, and most importanly, smartly crafted songs that braid dissonance with rockin' heavieness. Stylistically, it's a kind of post-hardcore-NOT!-metalcore that you hear in bands like These Arms Are Snakes, At The Drive-In, Suicide Note, or maybe (pre-sucking) Vaux, but different in that it's portlier, with mid-tempo Am-Rep-flavored face kicks. The best tracks, "November 2004" (an anthemic and droney lil'number with buzzawing sheets of noise) and "Gods & Queens" (Total Polvo cum Caspar Brotzmann mayhem) somehow wedge atmoshpere into all the density, at times suggesting Neur-Isis-style introspecting. Hardcore, shmardcore, whatever you call it this shit rocks! - Decibel Magazine 8/10
