Brightwood - The Love Antidote EP (2006)The band tries their hardest to provide the listener with melodic, intricate instrumentation on their debut EP “The Love Antidote”. However, it seems that these efforts are often abandoned mid-song in favor of more hard-hitting, punchier choruses. As you’ll soon be able to tell, I’m a sucker for deep, melodic and, a word I probably grossly overuse, delicate songs. My previous, albeit limited, listening experience with the band had left me expecting this style of music upon the arrival of their new EP. I must say that they fell short in that respect. However, they may have ended up gaining more than they lost with me. Because of my affinity for the previously mentioned particular style of music, it takes a lot for me to admit just how much I dig Brightwood’s latter approach in their songwriting, which today’s scene is way too oversaturated with, as opposed to their dabbling in delicacy. When the attempts at profundity are abandoned and the band sticks with what they do best, it becomes quite easy to find oneself becoming immersed in their music. Andrew Brittell’s strong and seemingly spry vocals complement perfectly Brightwood’s brand of, dare I say it, emocore. He sings as though it’s the last song he’ll ever get to sing. I realize that sounds ridiculously melodramatic, but the extreme passion really is inherent. Brightwood really ups the intensity on tracks like “My Reply” and “The Futile which are, in my humble opinion, the band’s best shot at success.
1. My Reply

3. In Memory
4. The Futile
5. Surefire
